I used to worry that people could see my ostomy bag. I was self-conscious going to work, on dates with my wife, even just the grocery store. I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb. Now I go about my day with confidence. My bag is tucked in place – not hanging in clear view. I no longer feel like I stick out for the wrong reason.
Before my surgeries I did triathlons, lifted weights constantly. My health journey took a lot out of me. After surgery, I didn't feel like I could be active – my bag would just flop around and it felt awkward. Now I wear a band and can do everything I did before. I'm training for my first race post-surgery. I feel confident in my body again.
My worst fear became a reality. I was holding my 3-year-old son, went to set him down, and his foot caught my bag and knocked it open. I was so embarrassed. So mad. Since I started wearing a band, I can confidently exercise, play with my kids, and go about my day – without worrying that'll ever happen again.
Our scars tend to lie to us. They tell us we should be ashamed, embarrassed, and that our best days are behind us. They whisper that the future is bleak and shallow. But it's possible to overcome. Seeing other people overcome their scars has inspired me in my journey. Now it's time we inspire others.
